Legal Translation & Proofreading

Legal translation involves more than transferring words from one language into another. Legal terminology belongs to a particular legal system, and apparently equivalent terms may refer to different concepts, institutions or legal relationships.

My work focuses particularly on German legal and professional content in English. The aim is not to make German law sound as though it originated in an English-speaking legal system, but to communicate its meaning clearly and accurately without obscuring its legal context.

I combine legal and linguistic expertise with terminology, semantics and more than two decades of experience in professional communication.

A German legal term does not necessarily have a direct English equivalent. Even where an apparently suitable term exists, it may carry a different legal meaning or suggest a Common Law concept that does not correspond to the German one.

Legal translation therefore begins with the concept behind the terminology.

Depending on the document and its intended audience, the appropriate solution may be to use a functional English equivalent, retain a German legal term with an explanation, or formulate the underlying concept in English.

The objective is an English text that is clear and professional while remaining faithful to the legal meaning of the German source.

Translation and linguistic review may include contracts and contractual documentation, legal correspondence, employment and corporate law documents, compliance and regulatory materials, legal analyses and other specialist professional texts.

Different documents require different approaches. Contractual language, for example, raises different terminological and drafting questions from a legal analysis, an academic publication or an explanation of German law intended for international clients or business partners.

The purpose and audience of the document therefore form part of the translation process.

Not every document requires translation. Existing English texts can also be reviewed for linguistic precision, terminology, style, register, coherence and readability.

For legal and specialist texts, this includes considering whether English terminology accurately conveys the intended concept. A sentence may be grammatically correct and idiomatic while still creating an unintended legal meaning.

The aim is not to impose a different writing style, but to ensure that the English is precise, professional and appropriate to its legal or specialist context.

Legal language cannot be separated entirely from the legal system in which it operates.

My background combines legal studies in Germany and England with postgraduate study in terminology and extensive experience in professional language and communication. This allows linguistic choices to be considered not only in terms of English usage, but also in relation to the concepts they are intended to communicate.

This is particularly important when German law needs to be explained to international clients, colleagues, business partners or other professional audiences.

Each project is approached individually and confidentially. Before work begins, the purpose of the document, its intended audience and the relevant legal or professional context can be clarified.

For larger or terminology-intensive projects, recurring terminology and drafting decisions can also be coordinated to maintain consistency throughout the document.
